"A classic is something that every time you look at it, you accept it as it is and you see no way of improving it."
Warren Platner
Warren Platner was a prolific American architect and designer known for his contributions to mid-century modern design. Born in Baltimore in 1919, Platner studied architecture at Cornell University and went on to work for architects such as Raymond Loewy and Eero Saarinen.
In the 1960s, Platner began designing furniture, lighting, and textiles that would come to define the era's sleek, futuristic aesthetic. His most famous designs feature intricate, sculptural wirework that creates an almost ethereal quality. His iconic chairs, tables, and lighting fixtures can be found in homes, offices, and public spaces around the world.
One of Platner's most famous pieces is the Platner Chair, which he designed in 1966 for Knoll. The chair is made up of hundreds of curved steel rods that give it a delicate, sculptural quality. Despite its light appearance, the chair is sturdy and comfortable, with a deep cushioned seat that cradles the body.
Platner's furniture designs also include tables, such as the Platner Coffee Table, which features a base made of dozens of steel rods that are welded together to create a lattice-like structure. The table's glass top gives it a light, airy feel, and its sculptural base makes it a statement piece in any room.
In addition to furniture, Platner also designed lighting fixtures, including the iconic Platner Pendant Lamp. Like his other designs, the lamp features a delicate wireframe structure that creates an intricate interplay of light and shadow.
Platner's work was highly influential in mid-century modern design and continues to be celebrated today. His innovative use of materials, attention to detail, and sculptural approach to design make his pieces timeless classics that continue to inspire and delight.
